Emerging Artist are the Future w/ Joe Chira "Jctheartconsultant"

Joe, I thank you for taking this time to speak with us, tell me a little about yourself?

Hey Camara – my pleasure. It’s always fun talking with a fellow art enthusiast.

My name is Joe Chira; born and raised in Brooklyn, NY and I started consulting six almost seven years ago. For the last two years, I’ve been curating projects for emerging artists.

When did you start collecting?

I started collecting art about ten years ago but on a much smaller scale. However, I was always a collector, whether sneakers, clothing, sunglasses, action figures or whatnot.

What was the first Artwork you collected?

The first piece of art I collected was a Takashi Murakami flower ball print. My wife loved the work, so I acquired it for her birthday.

Collections are continuously evolving; can you compare where your collection started to where it currently stands?

Oh, for sure. I have tried to avoid buying prints and now focus primarily on original works by emerging and early-career artists that I appreciate.

When you collect, do you prefer to spread out your options or focus primarily on a specific artist, depending on the availability of work?

It all depends on being honest with you. Sometimes I go for it, and sometimes it just comes to me. It has to speak to me.

What would you say was the focal point when you decided to dedicate your life & time to the arts?

I was at a time in my life when my career paths changed, and art gave me the opportunity to do something that I am passionate about. I enjoy meeting art collectors, gallerists, and artists. Being a part of the art community is fantastic.

You seem to focus on creating opportunities for small emerging artists, at times life-changing; could you tell us a bit about this?

It’s fantastic to see that my love for the arts, my social media platform, and the connections I have built have been able to help many artists along the way. I am happy I’ve been able to help change their lives. I guess you could call it my calling.

I believe we relate upon working in the background of the art world; you’ve been behind bringing many projects to collectors worldwide without much notice; do you prefer to work within the background of projects?

Every project is different, so I don’t have a preference, but I enjoy it all.

Understanding the politics between being a consultant and, at times, an influencer, do you aim to use your platform to advise art supporters on what artists to appreciate?

I try to… it’s not always easy to break artists, but sometimes it just happens. Instagram has been an excellent platform for me to help artists. I’ve been fortunate to build many relationships with artists worldwide.

For those looking to support artists, what are a few basic ways to approach using their resources?

Support comes in all forms. You don’t have to be a patron to support. Spreading the word, going to shows, and posting pictures on social media are all ways you can support an artist.

If you’d like to discuss what are some upcoming projects you’d like us to keep an eye out for?

I’m curating a show in Los Angeles with Lorin Gallery in February during Frieze LA week. It’s going to showcase some fantastic talents – I’m pretty excited about it. But this is just the beginning, and there will be other projects along the way, so stay tuned.
