Mowalola, The British Designer Bringing New York Fashion To London Runaways

Mowalola Nigerian-born, London-based designer who brought New York fashion to London. Exploring hyperreality and the issues around it, She uses elements of Neo-Punk to create an aesthetic in her collection cultivated by 1970s highlife music, psych rock album cover artwork, and low-budget action films viewed on VHS cassettes.

Dark Web Fall/ Winter 2023 Collection Mowalola approaches the conversation of a dystopian hyperreality. Displaying models with features and attributes; that portray homage to Barbie dolls while bringing us to imagine a dystopia or what people would wear during end times, Conceptualizing the conversation of when faced with an apocalypse, what we leave behind are the products we used and discarded; garments that no longer fit our bodies or fashion sense; and books of knowledge—the ones deemed unimportant by future generations. The collection was bold and meant to be eye-catching. It paid homage to New York City with oversized logos, belts, buckles around socks—and even a designer’s take on the Museum of Modern Art logo.

It wasn’t all New York, New York; This season also brought forth an aspect of tech references as the title of this collection is “Dark Web,” starting with a provocative top with the phrase “Insert Disk Here” with an arrow pointing at the crotch.

My favorite garment of the entire show goes to the tank top with the phrase “Sue Me’ printed on the front of it, a direct jab at the capitalist companies, a giant middle finger to capitalist society, and inviting you into her vision through art. While some may say she is making “bootleg” or “inauthentic products of certain big companies such as “Motorola”, ” The NY Yankees” and other big tech companies.

As a native New Yorker one thing, I never wear is a baseball jersey. Thankfully this collection didn’t have a single jersey. I look forward to watching the progression of this brand as from what I can see now, Mowalola will be a big name very soon; if not already.
