A newly founded emerging gallery named Tchotchke Gallery has permanently closed its doors. After being featured in Cultured Mag’s article “11 New York Galleries to Watch Out For Right Now” , no numerical hierarchy was associated with any galleries on the list. Still, they appeared as the 7th gallery out of the eleven.
Founded by Marlee Katz and Danielle Dewar, Tchotchke Gallery emerged into the art scene as an online gallery. They mainly displayed works through online viewing rooms & Instagram posts during 2020. As time progressed, they opened a physical gallery space located in Williamsburg in December 2022. A small space on the ground floor with steps leading into the gallery, displaying substantive artworks with redundant aesthetics, a similar pattern many emerging galleries that flourished during COVID-19 had in common. Their mission to promote accessibility and strive to help emerging artists grow doesn’t go unnoticed.
After noticing that Tchotchke was conducting an opening displaying artworks by Racheal Tarravechia, as the founder of Gotham Art News, I notified a member of our team to view the upcoming show. We noticed that Google Maps deemed the gallery permanently closed; in disbelief, we checked their website, and it also announced it was permanently closed. During a final attempt to find the gallery’s standing, we looked for their Instagram, which is nowhere to be found, and relayed us to an unfound page.
Little to be found about the disappearance of the emerging gallery, but sources relay that one of the owners had stolen intellectual property and refused to participate in expenses pertaining to the business.
