In protest news, today two members of the climate activist group “Just Stop Oil” spray-painted the ancient landmark Stonehenge with orange cornflour. Their demands are that “the incoming UK government commit to working with other governments to agree an equitable plan to end the extraction and bring of oil, gas and coal by 2030.” These demands force action on renewable energy and stricter emission controls.
The group consisted of two activists. Police quickly intervened, arresting the individuals on charges of vandalism. The act sparked a wave of controversy, with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak telling The Guardian: condemning the action as “a disgraceful act of vandalism.”
Stonehenge, a well known prehistoric monument with significant historical value. Used for around 2000 years, from c. 3700 to 1600 BC, for ceremonial and mortuary practices. In 1986 Stonehenge was recognized as a World Heritage Site, providing insights into Neolithic and Bronze Age societies, serving as a burial ground and a ceremonial site, reflecting its cultural and religious importance.
