Exclusive Interview with Marlee Katz Snow: Founder of Collect Bean

Welcome to an exclusive interview with Marlee Katz Snow, the visionary founder of Collect Bean, an innovative art platform revolutionizing how art enthusiasts connect with unique artwork directly from artists’ studios. In this interview, Marlee shares insights into the world of contemporary art, the mission behind Collect Bean, and how the platform is bridging the gap between creators and collectors.

What inspired you to create Collect Bean?

Championing and building relationships with artists is paramount to me. Going into 2024, I wanted to create a thoughtful platform to showcase talent I admire directly from their studios. Collect Bean supports creatives, allots curatorial opportunities, and, most importantly, connects artists while highlighting their work and making the acquisition process unintimidating. I want individuals to feel comfortable and confident in buying art without the pressure of sharing who they know, previous acquisition details, or simply not feeling sure enough to say, “I don’t know where to start.” If someone loves a piece, wants to learn more or support an artist, they can do so in a familiar and digestible way. I have done the pre-vetting for them and aim to seamlessly bridge the gap between the creator and the collector.

How did your background as a gallerist and curator influence the development of Collect Bean?

Being a professional in the art world taught me how much I adore working with rising talent in the primary market and being a part of their journey, whether as a small stepping stone or a more considerable investment like representation or management. Over the years, my favorite part of the art world has been doing studio visits, getting to know artists, and learning about the galleries and the goals they strive for. Conversations like, “You may like so-and-so; they are thinking a lot about the same subjects you are; let me introduce you two,” have led to some of the best discussions, friendships, and thoughtfully curated exhibitions. Most of the time, artists aren’t taught about marketing or business in school, and guiding them through consignment agreements, seing up an LLC, and other small but necessary steps in their journey is something I love and have expertise in. As Collect Bean developed, it made perfect sense to bring all of these conversations and talents together, allowing them to showcase a single work in an unintimidating and friendly way while continually thinking about being a catalyst for their growth.

Can you share a pivotal moment in your professional journey?

Starting my own business and being confident in my point of view have been the most pivotal aspects of my career. Developing something from the ground up in a space with barriers to entry is tough, but pushing through and making it happen is incredibly rewarding. I’ve learned to trust my eye and go with my gut, only working with professionals when it feels right and genuine. This ability to make discerning choices and follow my instincts has been my career’s most significant driving force.

What sets Collect Bean apart from traditional art platforms within the industry?

I spent a lot of time researching online art-collecting platforms and found that very few presented small, curated shows every month, specifically focusing on emerging talent. Most had heavy inventories that lacked a digestible and harmonized approach.

What truly sets Collect Bean apart is its thoughtful presentations and collaborative nature. Starting in July 2024, allcollections will be co-curated by artists or other creatives in the industry. This gives practicing artists an outlet to plan an exhibition, bring in their expansive network, and learn more about the business side of the art world. I deeply value my relationships, and the trust we build in working together to create beautiful collections truly sets the platform apart.

How do you balance innovation and tradition at Collect Bean?

Collect Bean will always maintain a strong curatorial viewpoint, valuing uplifting artists and educating collectors. Operating in the digital space is innovative, especially in an industry where traditional brick-and-mortar galleries are considered the norm. With many institutions adopting digital models and some well-known galleries closing their doors, there is a solid foundation for digital platforms to evolve and thrive. Continuing to produce thoughtful, collaborative exhibitions with talent I trust and believe in, Collect Bean honors tradition while presenting work in a digestible and accessible way, allowing us to grow and adapt alongside the ever-changing market.

Can you discuss your vision for the future of Collect Bean and any forthcoming projects?

Collect Bean’s vision is built on collaboration and community-building. Recently, an artist messaged me to express gratitude, saying that being part of Collect Bean introduced him to a strong group of friends, and they now attend openings together regularly. That sense of community is the future of Collect Bean—bringing people together while continuing to showcase the work of emerging artists. In the coming months, we will present two artist-curated collections by Aurora Abzug and Josiah Ellner alongside plans for in-person curatorial partnerships, participation in art fairs, and maintaining a steadfast digital presence.
