Alamo Drafthouse workers in New York City have taken a stand against mass layoffs, launching a strike at the chain’s Manhattan and Brooklyn locations. Their demands center around fair treatment, job security, and transparency in corporate decision-making. Represented by UAW Local 2179, these employees have also filed an Unfair Labor Practice charge, accusing the company of failing to negotiate in good faith.
The strike comes amid major industry changes, particularly following Sony Pictures Entertainment’s acquisition of Alamo Drafthouse. Workers and union representatives argue that the layoffs are a direct result of corporate restructuring, raising concerns about how corporate takeovers impact employees in the entertainment industry. With tensions mounting, the dispute has gained public attention, fueling discussions on labor rights and unionization efforts across NYC’s service and entertainment sectors.
Workers say the decision to strike wasn’t taken lightly. The layoffs affected approximately 70 employees, many of whom had been actively involved in collective bargaining efforts.
