Born in 1942 in Evanston, Illinois, as Philip Garner, Pippa began her artistic journey with a background in industrial design. After serving as a combat artist during the Vietnam War, she returned to the U.S. and gained attention for her project Kar-Mann (Half Human Half Car) (1969). This provocative piece humorously critiqued the automobile industry and societal values, ultimately leading to her expulsion from the ArtCenter College of Design.
