New York becomes the heartbeat of the art world with the upcoming Frieze New York event. One of the industry’s significant platforms follows up with another highly anticipated show after the success of Frieze Los Angeles 2023. This four-day event concluded in February this year and attracted more than 35,000 art lovers worldwide. Here’s a look at what’s to come in NYC and how you can be a part of it—even without a ticket!
About Frieze
Frieze is a leader in contemporary art—known for its publication and art fairs organized in locations like New York, Los Angeles, London, and Seoul.
The 11th edition of Frieze New York is already gearing up to be its most immersive event yet; with the return of its major galleries and new names, you’ll be excited to add to your collection. The multi-day event takes place May 17-21, 2023, and it’s the third year the event will be held in the Shed. Event organizers adopted this new space during the COVID era to bring a refreshed look and feel to the event while offering a spacious setting to accommodate its growing number of galleries and attendees.
This year, 65 galleries worldwide will exhibit solo shows spotlighting well-known artists, themed collaborative booths between galleries, and general catalog displays to see a wide range of offerings available. Many of the galleries featured at the event are New York-based.
Join the crowds of art experts, collectors, journalists, and aesthetes alike to explore galleries and artists at the forefront of the industry.
Attending Frieze New York
The Shed is a nearly $500 million development on the Hudson Yards. It serves as an art and culture center, hosting many of the city’s most prestigious events. Frieze New York occupies three levels of the structure for exhibitors. Entrance to the event is via the High Line, giving an eclectic start for what’s to come inside.
The venue features three designated areas:
The Deutsche Bank VIP Lounge
Main Gallery Hall
Focus Section
Official Frieze New York Map is coming soon. Here’s a preview of what to see in each.
The Deutsche Bank VIP Lounge
Deutsche Bank is the official global lead partner for Frieze. The VIP Lounge is an exclusive space for its Frieze 91 members and features works from a select artist every year (details coming soon about this year’s featured artist). In addition, VIP attendees can enter the lounge and mingle with other members of the Frieze 91 community, which includes collectors, gallery owners, and more.
VIP access to the art fair also includes:
VIP preview day access.
Special invites to other events during Frieze Week.
Entrance to participating NYC cultural venues.
A concierge service is available before the art fair to help coordinate your visit.
All VIP members can access the fair during the weekend and invite two guests.
Main Gallery Hall
The main gallery hall is where you’ll find all of the exhibitors. The central theme of this year’s art fair is a celebration of New York City’s creative spirit. The event curators strategically arranged the layout to allow attendees time to reflect on each piece, meet with gallery owners (and representatives), and engage with its featured non-profit initiatives.
Frieze New York continues to grow every year-this year, featuring its most extensive selection of galleries. Notable galleries featured in the main gallery hall include:
Pace Gallery – contemporary art from the 20th-21st century
Gagosian Gallery – influential contemporary artists from 20th-21st centuries
David Zwirner Gallery – specializes in American contemporary art
Michael Werner Gallery – American and European artists from the 20th century
Tina Kim Gallery – represents emerging and established contemporary artists
Massimo De Carlo (Milan) – multidisciplinary, international artists
Goodman Gallery (Johannesburg) – international contemporary art
Kukje Gallery (Seoul) – Korean contemporary artists
The complete list of all 65+ galleries is available here.
Focus Section
The Focus Section is one of the most progressive sections at the art fair. It’s dedicated to new galleries less than 12 years old to spotlight emerging artists. The dedicated section sets these exhibitors apart from major galleries in the art market for a chance to discover new artists from around the world.
