A week has passed since our previous article announcing the permanent closing of the newly opened Brooklyn, New York, Tchotchke Gallery. An unexpected turn of events leads co-owners Marlee Katz Snow and Danielle Dewar to disengage in business together. Allegations have come forth that the two were planning to split before the recent events.
Co-owner Danielle Dewar posted on Instagram, “To clear things up, I left Tchotchke Gallery last week and am no longer affiliated with the business.”
Artist Racheal Tarravechia also posted on Instagram last week, “I’ve already deinstalled my show, Cicada Lullaby. It wasn’t the kind of environment the work deserved to be shown in. Hope to be able to show the works to everyone again in the future, under better circumstances.” Cicada Lullaby was to be Racheal’s second show with the gallery and had planned to open on August 15th.
Artist Elena Redmond has also announced on Instagram their separation from the gallery.
Information relayed from gallery owners who preferred to stay anonymous have stated allegations that “Danielle has changed the sign-in email and password to the Instagram & the gallery social media account was either changed and deleted.” “Both co-founders worked hard towards the gallery’s development and split the business’s expenses 50/50. In protection of the art installed inside the gallery Marlee had locks changed to the gallery.”
Co-founder Marlee Katz, was unable to talk about the events pending a legal situation but advised, “The Gallery doesn’t intend to reopen.”
After the previous article, we reached out to Danielle, who had offered to grab a coffee to speak further about the matter but shortly after declined to proceed with the conversation due to the legal situation being conducted.Â
Since the situation, the gallery doesn’t intend to reopen. The momentum Tchotchke Gallery has achieved in a short amount of time is noticed by fellow artists and collectors. They have shown the public that it is possible to bridge art between virtual viewings & physical exhibitions.Â
