New York’s David Lewis Gallery Bids a Final Farewell

David Lewis Gallery, a renowned fixture in the contemporary art world, is set to close its doors. The somber announcement was made founder by David Lewis through Instagram, the gallery’s founder and namesake, sending shockwaves through the arts.

“After 11 years, starting at 88 Eldridge St on the Lower East Side, followed by 57 Walker St in Tribeca, David Lewis is going to close. During its run, the gallery presented 80 exhibitions. ‘Everyone Loves Picabia,’ a group exhibition marking the gallery’s roots, is also the gallery’s final show.

“I entered the gallery world as a wide-eyed academic, and, after over a decade of professional growth, it feels right to come full circle (Francis Picabia loved composing with circles!). I’m bringing to a close this iteration of my gallery with a celebration of artists, creative communities, and innovative, even transgressive ideas. It has been the honor of a lifetime to work with such brilliant artists. It’s time now for a new chapter, which will further develop these collaborations and commitments.

With love, admiration, and optimism.

David Lewis”

Art enthusiasts and patrons alike have expressed their dismay, recognizing the gallery’s significant role in fostering artistic innovation and dialogue. As the gallery prepares for its final exhibition, it serves as a poignant reminder of the gallery’s indelible mark on the world of contemporary art, even as it bids a heartfelt farewell.
