Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced on June 1, 2024, a budget decision to cut over $32 million in funding for the arts. This controversial move reduces the state’s arts budget significantly, affecting numerous cultural programs and organizations, including GableStage, which lost over $70,000 in funding.
Specific cultural institutions affected by the funding cuts include the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, the Enzian Theater, the Orlando International Fringe Festival, the Orlando Museum of Art, the Orlando Science Center, and the United Arts of Central Florida.
Orange County alone lost $1.95 million for arts groups. DeSantis stated the redirection of these funds toward what he described as ‘more critical sectors.’ Critics argue this move could significantly impact community engagement and creative education across Florida.
