Buttermilk Channel, a Beloved Brooklyn Restaurant, Closes After 16 Years

The beloved Buttermilk Channel, a Carroll Gardens institution known for its cheddar waffles, duck meatloaf, and pecan-pie sundaes, closed its doors on December 31, 2024, after 16 years of serving the community.

Since opening in 2008, Buttermilk Channel became a go-to spot for families and locals, offering a cozy atmosphere with paper-lined tables, outdoor seating, and a menu of comforting favorites like fluffy pancakes and warm lamb salad. Owner Doug Crowellemphasized the deep relationships built with patrons over the years, many of whom grew up dining at the restaurant.

Crowell decided to close Buttermilk Channel to focus on his Boerum Hill bistro, French Louie, which recently celebrated its 10th anniversary.

Buttermilk Channel’s two outposts in Japan will continue to operate, and Crowell hinted at a possible reopening in Brooklyn under the right circumstances. For now, the restaurant’s closure marks the end of an era for many locals, who recall fond memories of shared meals and milestones celebrated at the iconic spot.
