Paula Cooper Gallery is presenting an expansive retrospective of Carl Andre’s works across its New York locations at 534, 521, and 529 W 21st Street. The exhibition runs from January 9 to February 8, 2025, marking one year since Andre’s passing and showcasing his revolutionary approach to sculpture and poetry.
Main Gallery (534 W 21st Street):
• Breda (1986): 101 blocks of Belgian blue limestone.
• Rise (2011): Vertical and horizontal steel plates creating a semi-enclosed space.
• Ferox (1982): Triangular steel floor sculpture projecting from a corner.
Smaller Gallery (534 W 21st Street):
• Twenty-Eight Red Brick Line (1968): A seminal minimalist work first displayed at Paula Cooper’s inaugural show.
• Poetry by Andre: Includes experimental works gifted to Hollis Frampton.
Second Location (521 W 21st Street):
• A Memorial to After Ages (1983): Quincy granite sculpture alongside a related poem reflecting on the colonial history of Quincy, Massachusetts.
Vitrine Gallery (529 W 21st Street):
• Merrymount (1980): A pyramid of red cedar timbers evoking historical utopian ideals.
Carl Andre (1935–2024) redefined sculpture through industrial materials and minimalism. His works have been displayed globally, including at the Guggenheim, Dia: Beacon, and major European institutions. A Catalogue Raisonné of Carl Andre Sculpture is currently in preparation to document his extensive career.
