Japanese artist Ryota Watanabe, inspired by Freud and Giacometti, explores existential themes through painting. His latest exhibition, a duo show with Yuhi Shinuma, is on view at Nanzuka Underground in Shibuya, Tokyo, until January 15, 2025. Curated by Akio Inoue, the show features Watanabe’s unique approach to portraiture and landscapes, balancing traditional techniques with modern abstraction.
Watanabe employs “subtraction” to distill truth and redefine humanity’s evolving form. His paintings offer reference points while stripping away the unnecessary to evoke deeper truths.
Location: Nanzuka Underground, 3 Chome-30-10 Jingumae, Shibuya, Tokyo 150-0001, Japan
Exhibition Closing Date: January 15, 2025
