NYC’s New Added Sugars Warning Rule for Chain Restaurants

Starting October 4, 2025, chain restaurants in New York City will be required to comply with the Added Sugars Warning Rule. This initiative aims to educate the public on the health risks associated with high sugar consumption by mandating clear labeling on menus and menu boards.

A Warning Icon, must be placed next to food items with 50 grams or more of added sugars. This Applies to prepackaged items and identical non-prepackaged foods.

Warning Statements must appear at the point of purchase, menus, menu boards, and self-service food locations.

Why It Matters?

• On Average U.S. adults consume 68 grams of added sugars daily, exceeding the 2020-2025 Dietary Guidelines recommendation of 50 grams.

• Excessive sugar intake is linked to type 2 diabetes, weight gain, and tooth decay.

Who Must Comply?

• Restaurants with 15 or more U.S. locations under the same brand offering similar menus.

• Excludes mobile food vendors.

Penalties for Non-Compliance include summons and fines of $200 per violation may be issued starting October 4, 2025.
