Christie’s is set to auction off Jean-Michel Basquiat’s iconic painting, Sabado por la Noche (Saturday Night), in its upcoming 20th/21st century evening sale in Hong Kong. The sale, scheduled for March 28th, will coincide with Art Basel Hong Kong for the first time.
Estimated at HK$95 million–HK$125 million (US$13 million–US$16 million), Sabado por la Noche (Saturday Night) is a vibrant and frenetic painting, measuring 6.5 feet by 7.5 feet. This masterpiece features dark red areas on top of deep green sections, silkscreen elements, and traditional Basquiat symbols, including two “Griot” figures, alongside sketches of animals and minimalist female nudes.
This period of Basquiat’s career was marked by his collaborations with Andy Warhol, whose influence is evident in the silkscreen elements featured in Sabado por la Noche (Saturday Night). The work showcases Basquiat’s unique blend of graffiti and abstract expressionism, which has captivated audiences worldwide.
Asian collectors have shown a growing interest in Basquiat works in recent years. In 2021, Christie’s Hong Kong set a record with the sale of Basquiat’s Warrior (1982), achieving HK$323.6 million (US$41.85 million), the highest price for a Western artwork in the region.
