70+ of Kerry James Marshall’s Iconic Artworks on Display in London

As the Royal Academy of Arts in London hosts “Kerry James Marshall: The Histories,” art enthusiasts are treated to a monumental exhibition featuring over 70 iconic works by the American artist.

Marshall’s paintings challenge dominant narratives, delving into themes of race, identity, legacy, and representation. His vibrant works often feature monumental portraits of Black figures, inviting viewers on a thematic and stylistic journey through his career.

Marshall’s artistic journey began with a recognition of the lack of Black figures in European art. This realization sparked his focus on visibility, highlighting daily African American experiences and elevating everyday activities.

Marshall’s works touch upon epochal social and political paradigms of the past, including slavery, Black Power, and the Civil Rights movement. His paintings confront stereotypes and challenge dominant narratives, positing that the past can shape the future.

The Histories exhibition features a range of works, including “Untitled” (2009) and “Knowledge and Wonder” (1995). The show also includes “The Academy” (2012), part of Dr. Daniel S. Berger’s collection.
