The Whitney Museum of American Art was left reeling after a 34-year-old man took his own life by jumping from the museum’s rooftop, just before closing time on Wednesday evening. This tragic event sent shockwaves through the art world and beyond.
According to sources, the incident occurred at approximately 5:26 p.m., prompting a swift response from the New York Police Department after a 911 call was made. Upon arrival, officers found an unconscious and unresponsive man on the sidewalk below, with injuries consistent with falling from an elevated position.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death, while authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding this devastating event .
Whitney Museum Director Scott Rothkopf swiftly informed staff of the incident via email, acknowledging the profound impact it would have on the museum community. In his message, he emphasized the importance of self-care and support for colleagues affected by the tragedy.
Rothkopf’s email read: “This is something that deeply touches our community. Moments like this can affect each of us differently. Please take care of yourselves and one another, and know that support is available if you need it. OPC will be providing resources tomorrow and in the days ahead to help you cope with this tragedy.”
In a statement with Gotham Art News, a Whitney Museum spokesperson expressed deep sadness at the loss of life, extending condolences to the man’s family and friends, as well as to staff, visitors, and neighbors affected by the incident.
