Artist Mr Creasy Provides a Glimpse Into His Creative Style

Mr. Creasy, a digital artist whose figures are eye catching and creased. His signature style displays a variety of pop culture refrences often emphasizing cultural normalities. I had a few questions for Mr. Creasy about his practice and the strange aspects throughout his art, throughout this conversation we gain insight to his execution.

Can you tell us about the specific moments or experiences that inspired you to focus on the beauty of ordinary people in your artwork?

Mr. Creasy: I think we are all in a journey of observation and self measurement. We compare ourselves to other people, in search for normality, conformity. But there is no average person, average looks. Everybody is unique in its own strangeness.

How do you go about translating the universe of human essence into your character creations?

Mr. Creasy: I try to capture this uniqueness, any sense of humanity, in this shapes and until I see a glimpse of personality, until I can guess the name, the general mood of that character, I can’t consider the piece in the right path. And it is surprising to me that some details can change the whole biography of that person.

Could you share insights into your creative process and how you bring out the fun of personality uniqueness in your art?

Mr. Creasy: I make different shapes and start to search among them for something special, for a sense of balance and clarity of meaning. And once i find a starting point, I began to work in the shapes colors and ornaments, trying to make the character reveals itself.

Are there particular artistic techniques or mediums you find most effective in capturing the essence of your subjects?

Mr. Creasy: Not really. I find pictures are a nice way to incorporate objects and textures, but painting and distorting images digitally adds some non realistic features that i find interesting. So i try to use all the tools available.

How do you balance realism and abstraction in your artwork, especially when portraying the uniqueness of individuals?

Mr. Creasy: I try to avoid too much resemblances to reality and caricature features. And to find shapes that express some internal characteristic at the same time. It is mostly a try and error process and i have many portraits that i find uninteresting for being too unidimensional, or too cartoon like.

Could you share a memorable experience where a subject’s personality profoundly influenced your artistic approach?

Mr. Creasy: The compassion towards other people feelings is a lasting characteristic of my personality that I feel embeds everything I do.

Are there any specific artists, historical or contemporary, who have influenced your perspective on portraying human essence in art?

Mr. Creasy: I don’t try to capture human essence, just a click of this ordinary wonder, of this unique, uneven, crippled, flawed, truthful human spirit that is everywhere you look. As casual as Vermeer and as improbable as David Henry Nobody Jr.
