Saqqara, a burial ground located south of Cairo, is one of Egypt’s most important archaeological sites.
It served as a necropolis for Memphis, the capital during Egypt’s Old Kingdom. Saqqara is home to numerous historically significant tombs and monuments, including the Step Pyramid of Djoser, the earliest large-scale stone structure in the world.
Saqqara holds burial sites for state officials, high-ranking clergy, and nobility from multiple dynasties. Excavations at Saqqara continue to find key artifacts and tombs, bringing forward the daily lives, religious beliefs, and political structures of ancient Egypt.
