Brooklyn Museum Rally Over Planned Staff Layoffs

The Brooklyn Museum is facing public scrutiny following its announcement of planned layoffs that will impact 10% of its workforce. The institution, which is grappling with a $10 million budget deficit, intends to let go of more than 40 employees, many of whom are represented by DC-37 Local 1502 and UAW Local 2110.

The decision has sparked outrage among staff and supporters, who argue that these layoffs not only undermine the dedication of long-standing employees but also violate union contracts. Critics have accused the museum of financial mismanagement, saying that the burden of budget shortfalls should not fall on the workers who have helped sustain the institution’s cultural mission.

In response to the layoffs, a rally took place in front of the Brooklyn Museum on Thursday, March 6th, where union members, museum staff, and supporters will gather to protest the decision. Organizers emphasize that the museum’s leadership should explore alternative solutions rather than cutting jobs that are vital to the institution’s daily operations and community engagement.
